INTERNIST

Dr. Ellsworth Pryor, internist/infectious disease (Santa Clarita)  661-255-8544
Black male, very thorough and caring.  Not always as friendly as possible, but he listens
and is concerned about you as a patient and person.
MM Gwendolyn
OB/GYN

Dr. Conwell Carter (Cedars)
Dr. Conwell Carter has been my ob/gyn for 5 years and I can't say enough wonderful things about him!! Trust me--you will LOVE
him.  He's delivered all of the babies in my family, including my cousin Jasmin who's going to college this Fall.  So, he's been
around a long time, but he stays current, too.  I recently told my husband that Dr. Carter is an angel on earth because he's been
with me through everything.   PLEASE go to him and I promise you won't be disappointed.    Also, he's African-American and
comes from a long line of doctors in his family (even before I knew that black people could be doctors :-)).
MM Erika

Conwell is my OBGYN and I love him.  I interviewed 3 and he is the best.  Nice on the eyes too.  He delivered carter.  I have many
stories I could share but he and his staff are wonderful and I would highly recommend him.
MM Allison

Dr. Conwell Carter (African-american) was my gyn for 9 years.  Pretty dry personality but nonetheless very thorough and
knowledgeable.
MM Tasha

Dr. Conwell Carter is wonderful and has a great bedside manner. I saw him only once when my normal doctor was out of town and
I really liked him. His staff was friendly and knowledgeable. He helped me get through a ruptured cysts. My insurance plan
changed so I never saw him again, but he is well respected amongst the Cedar Sinai Black Physicians.
MM Tiffani

Dr. Lewis Wyatt
I also saw once several years ago and I felt rushed and did not feel like I had time to ask vital questions regarding my treatment.
Nice doctor but a tad bit on the busy side.
 MM Tiffani

Lewis Wyatt is my OBGYN and I love him.  I am a high-maintenance patient and he's very attentive. He even calls me back the
same day.  Dr. Wyatt's only drawback is that he's at Cedars.  And since I am an all natural, no epidural type of girl...Cedars really
isn't the hospital for me.  Oh! and he's a brother AND he shares his office with his son who is a plastic surgeon...so you have a
baby and get nipped and tucked all in the same place!!
MM Lisa E.

Dr. Carol Jordan Harris
I adore her, but she just became too busy to return phone calls, or spend the normal visit time with you.  MM Tiffani

Dr. Lisa Masterson
I also saw once several years ago and with both doctor's (Dr. Lewis Wyatt also) I felt rushed and did not feel like I had time to ask
vital questions regarding my treatment. Both nice doctor's but a tad bit on the busy side.
 MM Tiffani

Lisa Masterson delivered Zoie. She was part of an all Black ob/gyn practice at Cedars. She is now in Santa Monica. I've seen her
on TV since then - has she gone Hollywood? :-) Nice, on the "younger" side. Interestingly, only engaged me in conversation when
Mel attended the appts. with me - otherwise, she was very rushed, in and out. I ended up changing to someone I felt was a bit
more personable. I know others love her.  Personal choice of course.
 MM Nina

Michelle Marine (Cedars)
She is the one that is going to deliver our babies.  She is pretty cool.  i've never had a bad appt with her and I think I'm pretty
picky.   Dr Marine is at Cedars and is black.
MM Alice

Dr. Gail Jackson
I delivered Amiri with Gail’s help and she was also my OB before Amiri.  She was really great except for two experiences.  First, I
was there for a birth control prescription and check up.  I was reading this book titled, “Christianity 101” and she asked was it a
good.  I told her it was good, but very academic book and that I was studying to teach at my church.  She then asked if what does
my church think about pre-marital sex seeing that I’m going to be a teacher and all.  I honestly don’t remember what my reply was,
but who wants their OB being judgmental like that.  For some reason I didn’t change doctors when I got pregnant with Amiri.  And
we were cool up until I started asking about birth plans and talking natural birth.  In the end, I had about as medically unobtrusive
a birthing experience you can have at Cedars, but I had to fight for it and that’s not something that I’d choose to do again.  I won’t
even go into how she attempted to get me to refer my pregnant celebrity boss to her.  But even in saying all of that, Gail was
cool.  If you want to pray with your OB, she’s the woman for you.  And that’s a pretty special thing.
 MM Sheree

Dr. Delores Kent (LA)
I have been seeing Dr. Delores Kent for over 10 years.  She delivered William and is also a sistah.  MM Yvette

Kia Winlock, CNMW  UCLA Maternity Associates
As far as OBGYN's go, you ALL know by now, that my only happy experience in life has been with my current Nurse Midwife at
UCLA, Kia Winlock.  She is also a Los Angeles Mocha Mom and is serious about making sure we all get the care we need.  The
group is made up of several OBGYN's and several Midwives, so you can pick and choose your caretakers at your leisure.
MM
Tammy
PEDIATRICIANS

Dr. Brenda Bass and Dr. Stephanie Quarrles (LA)
Both are sistahs and we have been very satisfied with them.  There are two to three other MM's who's children see Dr. Bass.
MM Yvette

Dr. Jena Liddy  --  Boulevard Pediatrics (Encino)
Malik's pediatrician isn't black, and I'm also not sure if they take Pacificare HMO, BUT it is worth the call to find out. All of the
Drs. in the office are great, and they came recommended by our very own
MM pediatrician, Sophia!  Malik's doctor is Dr. Jena
Liddy, and she's WONDERFUL!  He's also seen Dr. Shapiro.  Check 'em out...
 MM Kia

Dr. Shapiro  --  Boulevard Pediatrics (Encino)
We absolutely LOVE Kendall's pediatrician who was referred by MM Kia.   They have 3 Doctors in the practice and a wonderful
and friendly staff.  More importantly the office is CLEAN and to my surprise they have wood floors which is great for Kendall's
allergies.  I never feel rushed and he takes his time with us and answers all our questions and concerns.  I live in Northridge also
and use to drive all the way to Valencia to his previous Pediatrician who I didn't particularly care for.  I'm now 100% satisfied and
my son will be a patient for life! :-)
MM Kathy I

Dr. Angelee Reiner (Tarzana)
We love our pediatrician .  If you go, please tell her that we referred you.  Good luck!  MM Erika JB

Dr. Charles Goodman (Northridge)
I am a holistic medicine mama for Kyle and he totally supports my decisions not to use western medicine.  Really nice staff in
Tell them Kyle's mom referred you.
MM Kimberly F.

We just came from Dr. Goodman's office today. LOVE HIM. I called at 2:55pm, got in by 3:05pm and was out by 3:45 at the latest
-- not bad for a last minute appt. LOVE HIM! (Referred by Kim F. of course). Never have to wait more than 5-7 minutes from the
time you walk in the door to being seen. They don't overbook appts. They validate parking and everyone in the office has a
great demeanor. Did I mention that I love him!
MM Kenya

Boulevard Pediatrics (Encino)
Check out Boulevard Pediatrics in Encino.  Several Mochas take their kids there.  Great Doctors, Great Office and Great Staff!
Recommended to me by MM Kia.  Thanks Kia!   Oh and our Doc is Dr. Jeremy...he's fantastic!
 MM Kathy T
DENTISTS

Dr. Dale Manuel (Encino)
For the first time in our LIVES our family is overjoyed with our dentist, Dale Manuel.  He just happens to be the husband of MM
Sophia
, so keeping it in the Mocha family makes it even sweeter.   MM Tammy

Dr. Jill Laskey  (Tarzana)
It is a family practice.  Father, Son, Daughter, and Son-n-law.  They specialize in children's dentistry.  We like the child friendly
environment and the service they provide.
MM Yvette

James Yee, DDS (Reseda)
We love, love, love Zoie's dentist, Dr. Yee - he and his staff are personable, approachable, professional.  Zoie has never been
scared, and actually enjoys her visits. His office is designed for kids, down to the miniature dental chairs, tv/dvd's, and mini water
fountain
MM Nina.

Dr. Wan (Thousand Oaks/Camarillo)
If u don't mind driving a bit, check out www.spaceshipdentist.com.  Malik had work done in the thousand oaks office because we
needed it done asap, but he sees dr. Wan in the camarillo office every 6 months. They're worth the drive twice a year.
MM Kia

Dr. Joseph Sciarra (Woodland Hills)
We go to Dr. Joe -- an original recommendation from Kathy Shirley.  Lance did amazing there. Dr. Joe and his staff are great.
He's in Woodland Hills on Ventura Blvd.
MM Kenya
DERMATOLOGISTS

Dr. Mavis Billips  (Cedars)
I've had a pretty serious excema condition since I was a toddler and I've seen MANY dermatologists.  This is my first time seeing
an Afro American female and I must say I am very pleased.
MM Francyne

Dr. Marcia Glen (marina Del Rey)
She's a black dermatologist in Marina Del Rey.  She comes highly recommended by many friends of mine who are also
physicians.  I was a patient of Dr. Herriford and she's okay but I  only saw her for scalp treatment.
 MM Simone

Dr. Jennifer Haley (UCLA)
She is excellent and knows our skin!  MM Maureen

Dr. Carla Herriford (LA)
Check out her website.  MM Erica
FYI
If you really want to find a black physician contact the National Medical Association.  It is
the national association of black doctors but they don't call themselves that.  They are a
very cohesive group which meets every year in a different city for their national convention.
They have a local chapter in LA.  Also, there is a LA chapter of the Black Women's
Physician's and they are very active.  In fact they give out about 4 scholarships a year to
young women entering medical school.
MM Simone
CHILD PSYCHIATRIST

Andrea Best, MD (Valencia)
This is an African American female child psychiatrist that I know. I contacted her and she is currently accepting new patients.
She does on-going therapy along with medication management, if warranted.  This is good since some psychiatrists only do
medication management or will automatically push medication even when it is not warranted.
 MM Gwendolyn
Pediatric Ophthalmologist

Dr. Sheryl M. Handler (Encino)
We have seen Dr. Sheryl M. Handler. She is in Encino on Ventura. MM Maureen
